What Is a Body Bronzer?

Summer means it’s time for shorts, sundresses, and swimsuits. What goes better with the season of the sun than glowing skin and a flawless tan? Whether you are looking for some extra color to add to your tan or want to highlight the glow on only a few parts of your body, a body bronzer might be just the thing for you.

Body bronzers are a tone-enhancement option that give you the chance to add color with no extra commitment on your part. If you don't like the way it looks, you can simply wash it off with soap and water. Body bronzers enhance your current skin tone and tan, providing a highlight to the base you already have. Best of all, they work on a variety of skin tones, from deep shades to the fairest of skin.

Types of Self-Tanning Products

Self-tanning might feel like jumping headfirst into the ocean without a life jacket. From body bronzer to instant self-tanner and everything in between, it can be intimidating to try to figure out how to get started. Depending on the level of color you are trying to achieve, different products will be a better fit, and we’ve got you covered with this guide to self-tanning products.

Body bronzers, also called body shimmers, give you an instant bronze look, perfect for a last-minute date or a touch-up just before a big event. Unique to bronzers, the effect is short-term, so these can be nice to use for a special event or if you really want to draw attention to a part of your body. Unlike other tanning products, if you make a mistake or think you've gone overboard on the color, starting over is as simple as washing it off with soap and water. If you're wanting something that lasts longer or is more gradual in appearance, you might want to choose an instant self-tanner, gradual self-tanner, or body highlighter.

Instant self-tanners are one of the most common tanning products. Once you apply it, voila, you'll have color anywhere from within minutes to within hours. Many people elect to use these tanners because they usually last the longest, therefore requiring fewer touch-ups. They also frequently include DHA and can give you a tan without needing other products.

Instant self-tanners come in various forms, from lotion to mousse, so you can choose whatever is most comfortable for you. Touching up when you use instant self-tanner can be tricky, though, since the tan is sometimes immediate.

Gradual self-tanners might be your best bet if you aren’t completely comfortable with your tanning skills yet, or you simply want to see how a tan would look without too much commitment. These typically come in the form of a lotion and allow you to apply color to the areas you want (or all over) on a daily basis.
You will normally notice a slight change in color after a day or two. From there the opportunities are endless:

  • Continue building on that color daily for a deeper glow
  • Utilize a body bronzer to highlight your new glow
  • Take a pause on application to let the color fade
But, keep in mind that these are not instant, so if you have a specific outing in mind, it is important to start a few days beforehand. You can also apply gradual self-tanners after a shower, but make sure to allow the lotion to dry before trying to get dressed. Wet skin moisturizers are a great option if you are new to self-tanning since they tend to spread across your skin more easily.

Body highlighters are perfect if you are looking for brighter skin. These highlighters are temporary and wash away easily, just like body bronzers. But, instead of a tan, think of body highlighters like blush for your body. They won't make you look as tan as other self-tanners, but they can brighten your skin. You can use body highlighters on top of regular self-tanner for an extra glow.

How to Apply Body Bronzer

Before you decide to apply the liquid bronzer to preferred areas, it's important to make sure you have prepared your skin beforehand. This process ensures that the bronzer stays on, looks optimal, and gives you the maximum effect when wearing it.

  1. Start off with clean, dry skin. This ensures the bronzer stays on since water and oils from your body can make it wash away quickly.
  2. Use a circular motion to apply the bronzer, making sure to blend well to give it a natural appearance. If you find it hard to reach certain areas or don't want to stain your hands, using a mitt can help during this process. Make sure to go lighter on areas that are likely to soak up more bronzer, like your knees, elbows, and ankles.
  3. Thoroughly wash your hands after you've completed the application to avoid unnecessary staining.
  4. Wait until you are dry before getting dressed to prevent your clothing from getting stained.

It's usually better to start out small and apply more if needed. Using once gives you a lighter, more natural look. If you want your tan to look darker, try applying more color to the desired areas. If you apply too much or want to remove your color, use soap and water to wash it off.
